Wilton Castle

The Central Courtyard

The central courtyard is surprisingly large. Prior to this visit, I never realised just how much of the walls still stand. Many of them are in a poor state of repair and work is in progress to stabilise them.

The south west wall and north tower have been stabilised and it is now possible to go to the 2nd floor of the tower, where I took the bottom photos out of the window. The floors and beams have been replaced and There is a hatch up to the battlements and it is possible to walk along the battlements of the south west wall. Although this was not possible during this visit, the views are apparently very impressive and give a real sense of the presence that the castle commands over the local area, even though it is a shadow of its former self.
