Postcard Snapshots

Some postcards have interesting messages that give snapshots into businesses in the town. The postcards were issued in association with the Traders' Association and were advertising material and were printed with the name of the business that sold them. Consequently, they were also handy items for town businesses to send messages to suppliers and customers. These are a few of the more notable ones from my collection.

Passey and Hall

A postcard view of Goodrich Castle, near Ross created from a photo by R. E. Davies
(Click for a larger image)

Sold by:

From Passey & hall, Ltd.,
MOTOR & CYCLE ENGINEERS,
THE CENTRAL GARAGE,
(adjoining Post Office), ROSS.

The message reads:

Quoted from 'Postcard sent by E. Passey'
Dear Bernie,
Enclosed please find the usual P.O's; are you returning on the 16th as arranged, or has anything further turned up to prevent this? Shall be glad to get you back. Brown is nearly dead waiting so long for his holiday, yours faithfully E. Passey

This message is rather cryptic as I don't know who Bernie or Brown are, but they were obviously quite important to Mr. Passey.

G. Shirley

A postcard view of The Wye from Coppet Hill created from a photo by R. E. Davies
(Click for a larger image)

Sold by:

From G. SHIRLEY,
CHINA & GLASS ROOMS,
High Street, Ross.

Sent to:

Quoted from 'Sent on 25 Aug 1911'
Mrs J B Dawson, Grocers, Mitcheldean, Glos.

The message reads:

Quoted from 'Postcard sent by G. Shirley'
Dear Sir,
Referring to your O.L July 8th. I have not yet received the hamper.
Yours truly
G. Shirley

This message seems to refer to a hamper that was either ordered from or ordered by Mrs. Dawson, who was apparently a grocer in Mitcheldean, and is either an apology or a complaint.

Barnwell's

A postcard view of The Market House, Ross created from a photo by R. E. Davies
(Click for a larger image)

Sold by:

From J. BARNWELL & SON,
1, MARKET PLACE,
ROSS,
Herefordshire

Sent to:

Quoted from 'Sent on 18 Jan 1918'
Mr Goodwin, Marcle, Dymock.

The message reads:

Quoted from 'Postcard sent from Barnwell's'
You will see a basket belonging to another customer has been sent to you in error. Kindly let us have it on Thursday if possible
Yours truly
[signature unreadable]

It is good to see that mistakes such as sending the wrong item to the wrong person is not a new invention. It appears that this may have been sent by a member of staff and corrected before being sent or during the card's travels.

Bussell & Pike

A postcard view of the Garron, Ross created from a photo by H. E. Wilkins
(Click for a larger image)

Sold by:

From BUSSELL & PIKE,
Grain & Seed Merchants, Roller Millers,
Ross-on-Wye,

Sent to:

Quoted from 'Sent on 21 Feb 1911'
Mr G. Ratcliffe, Pyson House, Ross.

The message reads:

Quoted from 'Postcard sent by Mr. Pike'
Dear Sir,
I understand there was some mistake made between your man & ours at the mill. It seems he asked for some barley meal, but did not state that it was a grist. I am sorry the mistake should have been made. Yours truly
N. J. Pike

This seems to be an apology for a mistake made at the mill that Mr. Pike felt needed to be sent to help clear up the matter.

G. Eltome

A postcard view of the Old Sundial on Wilton Bridge, Ross created from a photo by H. E. Wilkins
(Click for a larger image)

Sold by:

G. ELTOME
HOSIER AND HATTER,
ROSS

Sent to:

Quoted from 'Sent on 23 Jan 1922'
Mrs. Ratcliff, Trehale, The Reddings, Cheltenham.

The message reads:

Quoted from 'Postcard sent by Mr. G. Eltome'
Madam,
Esteemed order to hand has best attention.
Yours obediently
G.Eltome

This seems to be an order acknowledgement or similar sent by Mr. Eltome to a customer.
