Ross-on-Wye

This is a postcard view from 1906 of the Palace Pound titled The Castle Tower, Ross no. W6176 and is part of the "Wyndham" series.

Interestingly, not much has changed on the wall and buildings between 1906 and the present day.

This is a photo of four Ross firemen and their engine outside the fire station (behind them is the wall of the Royal).

It then became derelict and was finally acquired by ROADS Ross Operatic and Dramatic Society, in 1968. The photo to the left was taken just after the fire station was sold.

The building was then redeveloped and in 1983 it finally opened as "The Phoenix Theatre" after years of fund raising. The photo here shows the redevelopment as it was in progress on the 23^rd September 1977. The photo was taken by Walbrook Photography Ltd who were at 15 Broad Street, Ross.

It was extended in 2002 to give them better facilities. More details can be found at the Phoenix Theatre web site.

This view clearly shows the fuel pumps and a bus waiting out of the front of the hotel.
