This is a postcard view from 1906 of the Palace Pound titled The Castle Tower, Ross no. W6176 and is part of the "Wyndham" series.
Interestingly, not much has changed on the wall and buildings between 1906 and the present day.

This view of the Palace Pound clearly shows the sign for the Garage that used to be at the Royal Hotel. A bus can be seen parked outside the Royal. In the middle-right can be seen two ladies talking, most likely waiting for a bus, and a bit further right their shopping baskets and parcels can be clearly seen.
The Fire Station

This is a photo of four Ross firemen and their engine outside the fire station (behind them is the wall of the Royal).
It then became derelict and was finally acquired by ROADS Ross Operatic and Dramatic Society, in 1968. The photo to the left was taken just after the fire station was sold.

The building was then redeveloped and in 1983 it finally opened as "The Phoenix Theatre" after years of fund raising. The photo here shows the redevelopment as it was in progress on the 23rd September 1977. The photo was taken by Walbrook Photography Ltd who were at 15 Broad Street, Ross.
It was extended in 2002 to give them better facilities. More details can be found at the Phoenix Theatre web site.
